My First Blog Post

About Me

Be yourself; Everyone else is already taken.

— Oscar Wilde.

My name is Benson, I enjoy watching sports and playing basketball. I also like to spend time with my family. My family includes my mom, dad, and my little brother. I have lived in Williston, North Dakota my whole life. I am 18 years old and a senior at Williston High School. My favorite team is the UNC Tar Heels out of North Carolina.

My plans after high school are to go to North Dakota State University and pursue an education in Industrial Engineering and Management. I chose this career path because I really enjoy math, and also business. This I thought was the best career for me to get both of those.

I chose to start this blog to reflect on my senior year in high school, to see how I progress and how much I change through the year.

Brave New World Blog

Brave new world warns us about the dangers of giving the state too much control over our lives. These include the women getting their ovaries removed so they couldn’t have anymore kids, and medically changing the makeups of kids so they would turn out a certain way. It also showed that classes in society are way more serious when the state controls them. Society was controlled by the state and even people’s happiness was controlled. This should never happen.

The original idea behind the novel was to show that science was bad and we were using it too much and in the wrong ways. When people were in a bad mood science and the government just gave them drugs to make them feel better all the time and people abused them because they were always depressed. I think that this novel shows us a lot about what we don’t want our society to come to.

End of the year blog

This year I learned a lot in English. I learned a lot about classic novels, speeches, and plays. It taught me how to read classic literature. I learned a lot of new vocabulary and learned that notecards are a pain in the butt. Overall I think it was a good year besides the whole pandemic thing.

I enjoyed having Mrs. R_________, still don’t know how to spell your name. I feel like I connected with you a lot more and had a good relationship, so it made learning a lot easier for me. There was times I wanted to drop out of your class because I was so lazy and I didn’t want to do anything. Senioritis is a real thing and don’t let anyone tell you different, especially when the whole last quarter you sit and home and do all your work. It was a dream and nightmare all in one.

Satire Project

In our lessons about satire in the world around us we did a project on it. Our satire was Juvenalain satire. This type of satire is characterized by using social evil and making jokes/sarcasm about it. Our activity idea that we had before Covid-19 happened was to have a roast in class. This is where one of our group members goes up to the front and let’s anyone make fun of them. I think this would have been a great project for the class.

Some of the examples of this satire include shows like: The Simpsons, The Office, Austin Powers, and the Scary Movie series. My job was to make a pamphlet for the class to learn about this type of satire.

Hamlet vs. Lion King

The Hamlet and Lion King are very similar. They are essentially the same story, just one with animals and one with people. Hamlet is a story about a kid who’s dad was killed and he doesn’t know how. He learns that his uncle was the one who killed his father. He is in love with a girl and his relationship is ruined by this news. He ends up planning revenge on his uncle, but it turns out with everyone dying.

Lion King is about a family of lions who rule the plains with all the other animals in it. The top lion and his newborn son roam the plains all the time. His brother who is evil lives in a dark area of the plains and try’s to lure the child into his area. He ends up getting confronted by the father and eventually kills the father.

Senior Shadow Reflection

For my senior shadow day I decided to shadow Joe Barsh at the rec center here in Williston. I wanted to learn how a rec center works and what somebody who works there does on a normal day. Doing my research paper helped me pick a career that I wanted to know more about. Although I did not research this career in my paper it was a career I wanted to know more about.

When I did my job shadow, I learned a lot about keeping a rec center going. The biggest thing was that they all have there own area of expertise. Barsh was the head of the rec staff and had a meeting with them at the beginning of the day to see what was going on. Then later that day he went to a bigger meeting with the heads of all the departments to share what everybody had going on in the next two weeks or so. This helps so everybody knows what’s available and how busy the arc will he that day.

Hamlet Reflection

Hamlet is a play written by Shakespeare, it is a tragedy. The play starts with Hamlet realizing his father was murdered. Throughout the rest of the play he plans to kill his uncle who murdered his father and took over the throne of Denmark. Hamlet is also in love with Ophelia during the play. He ends up going mad and accidentally killing Ophelia’s dad Polonius. Ophelia then kills her self. Ophelia’s brother and Hamlet’s uncle plan to kill Hamlet. At the end they end up all dying and Fortinbras, who is Hamlet’s FOIL, becomes the new King of Denmark.

“Murder most foul” -Old Hamlet. This was my favorite quote from the play and the one that I thought meant the most. Throughout the whole play Hamlet seeks revenge for his father’s murder. At the end of the play he ends up dying along with everybody else though. The quote kind of explains what will happen at the end of the story without even knowing.

The song that I think relates the most to the play is Murder on My Mind by YNW Melly. Throughout the entire play Hamlet’s plan is to take revenge on his uncle for his father’s death. His uncle also plans to kill him when he finds out that Hamlet knows what he did. Ophelia’s brother Laertes comes back from school and also plans to kill Hamlet. There is always a plot to murder somebody in this play which is why I think this song explains it very well

APA Paper Reflection

In this unit writing an APA paper, I learned a lot. I had never wrote in APA before this year, so it was hard to get used to. They require a lot more formatting throughout the paper and also cite differently. Since this was an all new way of writing, the paper took me twice as long to write.

The whole paper was frustrating since it was new. It was the longest paper I have ever written (10 pages) and took me a long time. It was also a new way of writing and formatting my paper. Altogether I learned a lot and know that it will help me in the future when I go to college.

Personality Quiz Blog

I took the Myers-Briggs personality quiz. This quiz is used by lots of people that are curious but also big companies that use it to place workers where they belong. They have to take the quiz and then place you in one of 16 personality types. Based on that they tell you what job could be good for you, your workplace habits, and even your love life. The quiz is said to be very accurate.

When I took the quiz, I got placed in the entrepreneur personality type. I agreed with most of the personality traits that I would have in the workplace and others. The job it suggested for me was a military officer. I didn’t really agree with that job. I would never see myself as a military officer. I would say this quiz is fairly accurate and would recommend for anyone curious that you should take it.

The Canterbury Tales Reflection

In The Pardoner’s Tale there were three men that were drinking in the tavern. They saw a coffin pass by on the way to it’s grave. They knew it was their friend and asked who killed him. The bar tender told them that death killed him. They want a search to find death. In the end they find gold and end up dying because they were greedy for the gold. So their search for death ended with them dying. This was very ironic.

The Wife of Bath’s Tale was the other story I read. There was a knight who broke the knights code by raping a young girl. He was sentenced to find out what women truly desire in life. He was given a year and 1 day to find out. He searched and finally the Wife of Bath agreed to tell him if he would pay her with a favor after he was free. The favor to marry her. He did not want to do so but put up his end of the bargain.

The moral of both stories was that greed is the root of all evil. Another big part was self same sovereignty. These are both still a big part in today’s society. We see that greed can change anyone. Greed comes mostly from people wanting a certain person in their life or money. They will do anything to get what they want even if it is an evil thing to do. We also see self same sovereignty in today’s society. Women still want to play as big a role as men do in society. This has been their goal from the beginning, but they have not been able to do so because of how society works. Both of these ideas are present in society and are not

going away anytime soon.
