Historical Background Project Reflection

In this project I learned a lot about the Middle English time period. My topics showed me how society was in those days and more. I learned that clothing was a big part of social status in those days by the color. If you wore vibrant colors you most likely were apart of the upper class. I also learned a lot about the structure of castles back then. The many different styles and what they were meant for taught me a lot. Certain castles were better at protecting while others were built for more luxury.

Having to use a new technology rather than powerpoint or google slides was kind of difficult. I had never used any of the other options that were out there. I decided to go with Prezi as I had seen many people use it in the past. At first it was very hard to get used to, but after awhile I got used to it. It opened my eyes to all the different presentation options available to us nowadays.

Morte D’Arthur Reflection

In this story I saw lots of betrayal. King Arthur planned on fighting his illegitimate son Mordred. Sir Gawain came to him in his dream and told him to not fight him. It would end in his death. When both armies met to resolve peace a snake attacked a knight and he raised his sword to kill it. When he did so, Mordred’s army saw it as a sign to start war. This ended with King Arthur’s death.

In the movie “A Knight’s Tale” many qualities of medieval romance are shown. It shows how badly people wanted to be knights but only people with higher up families could become knights. It also shows that girls in those higher up families can not marry a man in the lower class. The man in this movie becomes a fake knight and meets a princess. He wins a tournament and gets to marry the girl in the end.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Reflection

In this reading I learned a lot about the knight’s code. They have many things that they must be careful of to stay a knight. In my opinion the most important one is respect women. Without that code women’s role in society would not have changed. Women did not get as many opportunities in society in prior time periods. All parts of the knight’s code are very important as well.

Another code that the knight’s must follow is to never decline a fight with an equal. I saw this code in the story between the Green Knight and Sir Gawain. The Green Knight came to their celebration and proposed a fight. Sir Gawain had to accept. He chopped the knights head off and had one year to meet him at his home to get his head chopped off. He eventually went through with the plan and the same thing happened to him.

Social Commentary Reflection

Technology is a very big part of this society. Technology has only gotten bigger since it was created. There is no chance it is going to to slow down either. The people who have grown up with technology there whole lives are very different from the people who didn’t have that technology growing up. It is very noticeable in the way we interact with others, and how we communicate.

Many people say that people are addicted to their phones and/or technology in general. I think they say this stuff because they did not have the opportunity with technology like we have today. I will admit that some kids probably spend more time on their phones than they should. It is just how kids these days communicate and more people need to accept that. Just because we are on our phones does not mean we are looking at dumb videos or texting. We could be researching things for a class or doing an assignment for school.

Field of Dreams Reflection

During both the movie “Field of Dreams” and the story “Beowulf”, they both showed epic hero qualities throughout. They both were told they needed to get something done and they wouldn’t stop until it was done. Ray was told to build a baseball field, and then go on a journey across the country. Beowulf was told to go help defeat a dragon and he had many fights after that. Both of them followed the journey.

Beowulf had heart and determination to defeat all enemies that stood in his way. His will to fight ended up getting him killed. Ray wanted to see his favorite baseball players from when he was a kid to play again. He almost lost his farm and all his money driving across the country to get what he was told to get. He eventually made it back and watched them play. Then almost the whole country wanted to come see.

Beowulf/Elegies Reflection

I learned that during this time period many people had a fatalistic viewpoint on their lives. That means that people believed that whatever happens to them happens for a reason. Everything that happens can not be changed and they take what they get it in life. Heroes during this time knew from an early time what there destiny was. They have evolved since these times with there stories getting passed on through time and carrying there legacies.

We see these epics in our society today through music. Many songs in today’s society use this way of writing to get a good point across to people. Many stories in today’s society use the same writing style as this too. They have a protagonist and antagonist that fight and have all the same events throughout the story. I do not believe that this writing style will ever go away. It has made a big impact throughout the years and lived on through it all.

Clutter Reflection

Reading “On Writing Well” by William Zinsser, showed me what clutter is, what it does, and how it affects us. Clutter is everything in writing that we write but do not need. Everyone has clutter and it is normal, but we need to try to eliminate it. It can be very challenging to eliminate though.

Clutter affects society in all writings. You see it in the papers you read, the magazines, almost everything. Not everyone notices it, because it usually sounds normal in the writing. Clutter has affected me in my writings a lot. I never noticed it until my amazing english teacher this year, Mrs. R, taught me about it. She showed me how to eliminate it in my writing. Now my writing is a lot better and I am proud of it.

Scholarship Essay Reflection

I learned a lot about myself writing my scholarship essay. As I wrote the essay I realized how much having a parent as a teacher in the school influenced the way I grew up. It has changed my life in both good and bad ways. It has helped me build relationships with my teachers. It sucks having my dad ask me about every assignment that I have ever had.

The hardest part about writing my essay was connecting my story to how it bettered me for the good. Now that I have one done it was a big relief to do it now instead of waiting til the end of the year. It has also helped me feel more prepared for college and all the things that go along with it. Preparing for college is a big step in my life and I want to be as prepared as possible, and this essay is a big step towards that.

My First Blog Post

About Me

Be yourself; Everyone else is already taken.

— Oscar Wilde.

My name is Benson, I enjoy watching sports and playing basketball. I also like to spend time with my family. My family includes my mom, dad, and my little brother. I have lived in Williston, North Dakota my whole life. I am 18 years old and a senior at Williston High School. My favorite team is the UNC Tar Heels out of North Carolina.

My plans after high school are to go to North Dakota State University and pursue an education in Industrial Engineering and Management. I chose this career path because I really enjoy math, and also business. This I thought was the best career for me to get both of those.

I chose to start this blog to reflect on my senior year in high school, to see how I progress and how much I change through the year.
